My name is Kim and I'm a member of the Champlain CCAC Patient and Caregiver Council. Currently my father is in a long-term care facility suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Professionally I am a social service worker and have worked in long-term care and group home settings.
I experienced being a caregiver first hand when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. I moved in with my parents approximately 3 years ago to provide full-time care. My mom passed away in June 2014 after a strong battle to beat the cancer. My caregiving journey was physically and emotionally draining but most importantly it was rewarding and inspirational.
As a result of my personal experience, I can relate to the ongoing struggles of caregivers and felt that I could contribute to the Patient and Caregiver Council. I hope to help provide support to caregivers when they are in need so they can have the confidence to move forward.
