Critical Engagement Underway

As you are aware, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Dr. Eric Hoskins, released a discussion paper, Patients First – A Proposal to Strengthen Patient-Centred Health Care in Ontario, on December 17th, 2015. In it, the Minister is proposing that the governance and delivery of home and community care services be transferred to the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) in the province. While these vital services will continue to be delivered by the same multi-disciplinary team of nurses, therapists and personal support workers, the CCAC Boards would be dissolved.

It's an ambitious plan. But system transformation at this level will affect not only CCACs, but all health stakeholders – hospitals, primary care, community support services and public health. We encourage you to participate in the Ministry's public engagement process, which launches this week across Northeastern Ontario.

For our part, the North East CCAC Board of Directors has sent a preliminary letter to Minister Hoskins in advance of our formal submission in response to the Patients First proposal. The structural changes being proposed will impact all health partners in varying degrees. I believe it is important that all of our voices are heard as we seek to enhance the patient experience in northeastern Ontario.
