Labour Disruption Ends

On Tuesday, February 17th, the North East CCAC welcomed back its ONA-represented employees after a 16-day labour disruption. The nine CCACs in Ontario impacted by the strike and the Ontario Nursing Association agreed to ‘interest arbitration’ to resolve the outstanding issue regarding wages.

“It’s been a challenging time for us all in the North East, and we certainly appreciate the support of our health care partners in the home, community, long-term care and hospital sectors as we worked together to provide priority services to patients during the labour disruption,” says Frankie Vitone, Senior Director of Care Coordination. “Our goal now is to ramp up to normal operations as quickly as possible, and resume our full range of services to patients, caregivers and families across our vast region.”

A New Approach to Dementia Care

Last fall, three representatives from the North East CCAC - Nurse Manager Tammy Windsor, Care Coordinator Nathalie Bureau, and Director of Research, Planning and Partnership Rob Barnett - embarked on a weeklong study tour to the Netherlands on the invitation of Windesheim University in the provincial capital of Zwolle. The trio was accompanied by colleagues from the Alzheimer’s Society and the North East Specialized Geriatric Services (who attended thanks to the advocacy of the CCAC, in recognition of their important role in the care of community patients with dementia).

The trip marked the end of year two of a multi-year research project funded by the Netherlands government, focusing on case management excellence for people with dementia and their families, and the creation of an international community of practice of researchers and care coordinators.
