New Helpline Makes Accessing Help, Health Care Easier for Toronto Seniors

TORONTO, December 13, 2016 – A new phone line is making it easier for Toronto seniors, their caregivers and their health care providers to access the home care, crisis services, and other supports seniors need.

Toronto Seniors Helpline (TSH), a joint initiative led by the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (TC CCAC), WoodGreen Community Services, and over 30 community agencies across Toronto [see below], offers a single telephone number to access a full range of services for seniors.

"Toronto Seniors Helpline is about making services more accessible," says Dipti Purbhoo, Senior Director of Client Services, Toronto Central CCAC.  "A senior or their caregiver shouldn't have to figure out which agency to contact for the help they need.  Now, they can simply call us at 416-217-2077 and through that single call, reach a variety of services and supports."

Services include help for seniors in crisis, access to in-home care such as nursing and personal support, counselling over the phone, access to community services such as Meals on Wheels and adult day programs, and support for caregivers.

Recognizing Toronto's diversity, the line is also TTY-accessible and interpretation services are available.  "We don't want our callers to experience any barriers in reaching out," says Ashnoor Rahim, Vice President of Community Care at WoodGreen.  "Toronto Seniors Helpline is staffed 365 days a year by highly skilled, compassionate professionals. Whether seniors need a little help or a lot, our staff are here for them and welcome their calls."

A model of integration across the home and community care sector, Toronto Seniors Helpline is funded by the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).
